Reports are springing up around the country of a sudden surge in pumpkin sales that has farmers puzzled.
"I ain't never seen nothing like it. We're clear sold out and from I understand people are carving out the insides and throwing the good stuff away," said an Amish farmer in Pennsylvania.
Bakers also indicate difficulty in obtaining a sufficient supply of pumpkins for pies. "We just can't figure out what the heck is going on with the public. They seem so susceptible to fads and now for some reason pumpkins have become the must have item. I'll be glad when the attention shifts to some stupid toy that every kid will demand for Christmas so we can get our pumpkin supply back," said an executive with a national bakery.
