About Disk Defragmenting

System performance is impacted to a significant degree by the speed of the hard drives. Keeping the speed of the drives at their maximum will greatly improve the speed of the overall system.

Defragmenting does not repair the drive, data or anything else in the computer.

Defragmenting the drives is one of the easiest ways to keep the drive speed at it maximum. Keeping the amount of data on the drive low is the best way to keep a drive fast.

Disk fragmentation slows your computer down and is often the cause of a variety of other problems such as hangs, crashes and errors. Fragmentation accumulates rapidly through the normal use of your computer and file and program access time continues to increase, problems worsen and the productive life of your computer shortens by years.

Built-in Defragment Tools

On 95/98/Me, the built-in defragmenter restarts whenever some other process accesses the disk. So, in effect, it never finishes.

In Windows XP, the built-in defragmenter won't operate when the free space gets low, and has trouble defragmenting files that need a large amount of contiguous space.

Given a choice, an after market defragmenting tool is preferred. However, using the built-in defrag program is far better than nothing.
