How to Configure Shared Windows Folders/Directories for Maximum Network Protection

New viruses can spread through shared network volumes. To prevent the spread of these types of viruses, share with read-only access or using password protection. It is safest if you do not share the root of the hard drive (in most cases C:\). Share specific folders instead.

The following steps assume that Windows is installed on drive C. If you installed Windows to a different location, substitute the new drive location in the following steps.

Shared Folders on XP
Shared Folders on 2K
Shared Folders on NT
Shared Folders on 98
Shared Folders on 95
