Verify that the Windows automatic updates are scheduled and working properly.
A significant number of infestations are perpetrated against systems using known exploits. Most of these exploits have fixes available well before they are used by malicious software.
By keeping the operating system hot-fixes current, the risk of infection can be significantly reduced.
Microsoft has created a method to automatically have the system download (and install) any critical updates when they become available.
