Evaluate what starts up automatically
The likes of Office, QuickTime etc. will always be there on demand when needed. If you're continually running them from startup, that will slow down your system. Here's a good site for checking what files are needed and what are not:

Uncheck unnecessary startups on Msconfig's Startup tab.
